Pharmacopoeia is an authenticated compilation, describes about the standards of Strength Purity of Drugs, Medicinal Preparations, Chemicals etc
Used in a specific country or region the term Pharmacopoeia originates from Greek word, "Pharmakon" means "Drug' and "Poeia" means 'to make so 'Drug-Making'

Many countries have their own Pharmacopoeia, like

  • U.S. Pharmacopoeia

  • British Pharmacopoeia

  • European Pharmacopoeia

  • Indian Pharmacopoeia


Indian Pharmacopoeia:
In India, at the time of pre-independence, British Pharmacopoeia (BP) was considered as the approved reference guide. In 1955, Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP), first edition was published under the guidance of Dr. B.N. Ghosh. IP was written in English and the drug monographs were scripted in Latin language. IP First edition supplement was published in 1960. in 1966, IP Second edition was published, and its supplement in 1975 Third edition of IP was published in 1985, followed by its addendum in 1989 and 19991.
In 1996, Fourth edition was published, followed by its addendum in 2000 and 2002. IP Fifth edition was published, in 2007, followed by its addendum in 2008, it has 3 volumes. In 2005, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) was established, and in 2009, IPC works as an autonomous institution, under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, located in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The main function of IPC is to publish IP and its addendum intermittently. IP 6 edition was published in 2010, followed by its addendum in 2012, it also has 3 volumes in 2014, 7th edition of IP was published and its addendum in 2015. 8th and the current edition of IP was published in 2018, consists of 4 volumes. Pharmacopoeia act as a book of reference in laboratories, industries and academic institutions to strengthen the knowledge of aspirants and help them to uplift their career
