Indian Army Infantry Day is celebrated annually on October 27 to honour soldiers who gave their lives in the line of duty to defend their country. On October 27 this year, soldiers from all four directions will hold four simultaneous bike rallies: The rally will begin on October 16 in Shillong (Meghalaya), Wellington (Tamil Nadu), Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), and Ahmedabad (Gujarat). On Infantry Day, it will arrive at the National War Memorial. The celebration was chosen to take place on October 27 because it was on this day that the first Indian infantry soldiers defended the country’s territory against outside aggression. On October 26, 1947, when Hari Singh, the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, signed the instrument of accession, the state of Jammu and Kashmir became a part of the Indian dominion. The first battalion of the Sikh Regiment quickly reached the Srinagar airbase to fight the Pakistani invaders. On October 22, regular Pakistani soldiers entered Jammu and Kashmir pretending to be volunteers and tribals from the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The group’s primary goal was to forcefully occupy the state and integrate it into Pakistan. After the Maharaja had signed the instrument of accession on October 27, Indian troops were called in to stop the Pakistani invaders after the state forces of J&K had initially resisted. Col. The first Indian battalion led by Dewan Ranjit Rai was announced. They moved to Palam Airport in New Delhi from their Gurgaon base. They were flown to Srinagar the following morning to defend the airport from the Pakistani invaders.
After securing the Srinagar airfield, Indian soldiers rushed toward Baramulla to halt the invading forces. Despite Lt. Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai committed suicide near Baramulla in order to halt the invasion’s progress toward Srinagar. After his death, the Maha Vir Chakra, the nation’s second-highest gallantry award, was presented to him in recognition of his bravery.
