Every person has to experience the ravages of ageing. Ageing involves the death of cells due to oxidative stress and the shortening of telomeres. Our muscle elasticity, physical stamina, strength and durability reduce due to a decrease in heart health. The impact of age and the wear and tear it brings with it is always more severe for those who lead a less healthy lifestyle. Excessive red meat, alcohol, smoking, recreational drug use, and a sedentary lifestyle accelerate the ageing process on average. Physical problems manifest mental problems which often require medication to help alleviate. This is in addition to the several other kinds of medication required by those leading unhealthy lives for example blood pressure medication, diabetic medication, and calcium supplementation in the case of women who are likely to experience osteoporosis with advancing age. It is therefore of great importance to a health institute like the Kerala Academy of Pharmacy to promote healthy living and subsequently healthy ageing. National Senior Health and Fitness Day is an event celebrated on the last Wednesday of May. It has been celebrated for over two decades and its singular purpose is to encourage greater physical activity among seniors. However, the Kerala Academy of Pharmacy emphasizes the need for all adults regardless of age, to pay heed to the call for more exercise and healthier living.
